Health Information Management Faculty
Margaret A. Skurka, MS, RHIA, CCS
Where do you work?
I work at a regional campus of a large University in the US---Indiana University
Northwest in Gary, Indiana, which is in the Chicago, Illinois metropolitan area.
How long have you been there?
I've been at the University a very long time---for 30 years now!!! Since January
What classes do you teach?
I teach the ICD-9-CM and CPT coding classes, including other classification systems,
as well as the Quality Management, and Reimbursement Methodologies.
Why did you choose this path in HIM?
I loved education and decided early on I'd like to teach. I enjoy the contact
with the students, who are all adults, and are attending the University, as they
want to learn, better themselves, and enter the profession of Health Information
Management. It is rewarding to see them in the workforce and hear from them in later
years with their success stories.
Benefits to being an educator?
New students each year
A chance to be creative
A somewhat flexible schedule including the benefits of University break periods,
such as holidays, and an extended summer break.
Comments for the international HIM education community.
If you are a student, welcome to the HIM profession. It is a rewarding one filled
with constant change and challenges. Please use the IFHRO web site frequently, and
the links provided also, to other associations/organizations such as the WHO and
Within the world of HIM we are more alike than we are different. We have the same
big issues facing the profession-The Electronic Health Record, Data Quality, Privacy,
Education, and the Needs of the Developing Countries. Let's work together for
the good of all.
